Saturday morning group(?) solo run

It was a clear sunny morning with crisp cold air. Two running clubs got together and there were about 40 or so runners showed up. I was looking forward to finding someone to run with from such a large group, but it ended up with a recurring nightmare… I experienced it when I used to be a member of half of the groups: I was left alone behind everyone. I ran all by myself for 3.5 miles and turned around. All other people ran 4 miles and turned around. The fastest people were already heading back when I was still heading up to the 3.5-mile point. After I turned around, many runners passed me from behind. About a half way back, I heard loud voices and noisy footsteps of a big group of people approaching behind me– it was overwhelmingly intimidating, and they passed by me as if they didn’t know me. Probably they really didn’t know I was one of the group. I felt like my regular quiet trail was intruded by a bunch of chatty noisy fast runners. More and more people passed me without noticing me. I was all alone in the biggest joint run ever, and it was no fun. My right toe started aching again at around 6 miles. When I was finally finishing my 7 miles, exactly at the same time my husband appeared in front of me form the other direction finishing up his 10 miles. That was exactly as I calculated/expected. We didn’t go to the post-run social brunch. I felt like a loner stranger, feeling really isolated from everyone else. At least I had a good physical exercise. It was my longest run this month. Well, I’m not really sure if I should call it a good exercise while my mind was under an attack by the solitude and inferiority.

I was the slowest kid from kindergarten to middle school wherever I went. I was always the last one to finish. I hated PE and I especially hated running. It’s one of the most amazing things in my life is that I started running after age 41. And I’m not going to quit it just because of unpleasant experience like today.
