Karate class - ow, ouch, owow
Today all other students were still out for holidays, so I got a private lesson. Started with a sequence of White Belt techniques, I practiced them in a combination while one punching/kicking and the other blocking. It hurt me a lot, both by punching/kicking & being blocked and being punched/kicked & blocking them. When the instructor threw me down, I hurt my right toe and I screamed. It was numbing for a while. I also popped & hurt my left thumb again while I was unconsciously curling it into a fist. I was hit on my head, ribs, underarm, and my punches were completely blocked, and there was a lot of ouch. There was nobody else to take turns, so I had a lot of endless practices. It hurt a lot. I was a little concerned if I could run tomorrow, but I should be fine.
Speaking of running, my ankles have no problem running suddenly (without walking or warming up) with barefoot on the floor. This makes me wonder if my ongoing ankle problems may have something to do with shoes. My log shows I’ve been wearing three different pair of shoes depending on the terrain and weather, and my right ankle has always been painful at the start of running for the entire month. Could it be that all my shoes are giving me the pain? Or perhaps, would any shoes give me a pain? Are humans designed to run barefoot maybe?

Karate class
I slept in this morning. My body needed extra rest. I woke up with rather bad left ankle pain and low back pain. Isn’t it interesting, it’s the “left” ankle today. Last night I was ball-rolling my feet and calves, and spotted a trigger point for my “right” ankle pain so I rolled that area longer. It probably worked, and so now the problem is on the left.
Nevertheless, the warm-up barefoot run was no problem. We did a sequence of all techniques for White Belt. Sounds like we’ll be tested next week or so. Also we practiced blocking: upward, inward, outward, and downward. It was just like those wax on wax off seen in the Karate Kid. The instructor blocked my hook and I hurt my left thumb when we heard a loud popping sound. What happened was that my thumb was curled into a fist, which was a bad mistake. I learned that the thumb must always be on top. Then we did a lot of rolling, forward and backward. Rolling on my left was tough on my low back pain, so I tried to stick to the right side. I hit my shoulder a few times. Repetitive rolling made me feel like a little bit dizzy, but I was really ok. Afterward, my low back pain got a little worse again, but more than that, my left ankle is so achy for the rest of the day.
I noticed my weight was way up this morning. Not sure if extra sleep put extra weight, but I should be very careful about putting weight. It could stress my ankles and low back even more. I can’t resist baklava, so I’ve got to control other calorie intake.

Karate class
My 2nd Karate class covered a lot of techniques again: chops, palm strikes, side kicks, and lots of choking mehods on neck, back of ears, collar bones and upper back. I really can’t remember so many all at once. I realized my feet are terribly achy being barefoot on the floor. We do a lot of warmup runs and jumps, and my feet can’t tolerate much, it’s just so painful. Especially balls of feet, then immediately front of them, and heels. I really need to correct whatever the cause is and strengthen my feet, not just for barefoot Karate but especially for running, especially before increasing the distance. My question is, what am I doing wrong– is it the way I land on the ground, or am I wearing a wrong kind of running shoes, or anything wrong on my feet, or something else.

My very first Karate
I’d wanted to learn Karate for a long time, especially since I watched Karate Kid some years ago. My gym was offering kids’ Karate class for years, but finally, they started an adult class today. So there I was. It was not a good idea to run this morning, as we had to do a lot of barefoot runs and crawls and squat walks on the floor, as well as push-ups and jumps as a warmup. The balls of my feet were achy and my legs were already tired to do all these. Basic punches and kicks were somewhat easy, just like I did in Taebo and Turbo Jam. But transition moves and blocks and rollings were complicated to learn for the first-timers. We covered so many things in the first class I hardly remember any. During the class I had to punch a huge tall guy and he had to defend and throw me down. The instructor told the guy that he was going to throw a tiny skinny grandmother. Duh, did I look that old? It was shocking! I was the only girl (I AM a girl, not a grandma!) until another girl showed up just 5min before closing. It looks like there’s one more girl joining next week. Overall, it was fun.
